Level One Instructor Certification Overview

Level one is the core foundation of the DSD training system. The core of DSS is comprised of Bruce Lee’s physical and academic application for: emotional content, strategy, speed, power, control, range, trapping, striking, and physical preparation based on the structured teachings of DSS Founder Sijo James DeMile . As an original student of Bruce Lee- James DeMile experienced firsthand how Lee reacted and analyzed different combative scenarios ranging from Wing Chun, Western boxing, Grappling, and Judo. Prior to training with Bruce - James was a former Military boxing champion as such,  he was not only was a seasoned fighter, he also had the ability to understand why certain movements were effective and then further extrapolate and break down their bio mechanical information as to how elements of a particular techniques worked together . James like Bruce could identify why other techniques were clearly impractical as means of aggressive combat or self-defense.  This process of analysis is the scientific basis in which DSS reviews each technique using the filters of efficiency, practicality, and simplicity as the root to determine what techniques are relevant to the effective development of the student. In level one the student is introduced to a key DSS fighting tactics and strategies reinforced by the aforementioned filters which are foundational to the learning and teaching process.

DSD Level One Overview:

DSD Centerline applications – Is the primary and default for position for DSS stand up and ground self-defense. The DSS centerline is defined by the user’s ability to touch their opponent with either hand. As such by maintaining the centerline position it allows the user to efficiently maximize their offensive and defensive capacity by being able to equally apply hand/arm movements to absorb attacking energy while executing traps, submission, strikes, and control over the opponent. Key Center line applications are:

  • DSD Fight Stance- The basis from which one goes from an unassuming non telegraphic position to centerline engagement, control, and termination.
  • DSD Combat Perimeters- How perimeter control works with the centerline why clearing the perimeter more efficient than chasing perceived movement
  • DSD Bridge Principle-the conduit for transferring and absorbing power from the centerline
  • DSd Spring Energy –the basis for applying ones attacking energy from a natural angles of control from the centerline
  • DSS Spring load- The frame of reference where the users energy meets the resistance of the opponent and then calculates the most efficient response for compliance or disablement.
  • DSD Positive/negative energy - Optimal range control and flow in the midst of the combative movement
  • DSD Trapping-introduction to fundamental concepts and superior hand/wrist positions for of controlling and redirecting an opponent’s attacking energy combined with different strikes and submissions from the centerline framework.
  • DSD SMMA attack principle- “Single Movement Multiple Action”. The basis in which one engages the opponent  as a single unit of power. One executes both strikes and blocks simultaneously using centerline control and forward energy as the framework for jamming the attackers offensive movement  enabling the user to gain dominant position for rapid control and disablement.
  • DSD SMMA Combat Series: Key components CL, B, CBJ, - TS, GS, PS, LS, DJ,
  • DSD strikes- Sting striking, vertical punching, palm strikes, knife hand, reverse fist, elbow, and kicks.
  • DSD take down defense- Basic yet practical techniques that negate an attacker from taking one to the ground while maintaining center line control from the stand up position.
  • DSD Ground Basics: Break falls, JJ stand up, framing for survival, creating space, getting back to center line control from guard position with centerline SMMA applications
  • DSD stand up self-defense-wrist grabs, front chokes, rear choke counter measure and escapes
  • DSD Sparring Methods- Learn how to apply sting striking and progressive intensity for optimal neuromuscular imprinting for greater spontaneity , flow, and explosive action.

DSD Physical & Mental dynamics-  Understanding the human body’s primal physical and psychological reaction to sudden stress and trauma as an important factor for training and application of technique. The key Response factors are:

  • DSD Power Principles- Recognizing the multiple sources power and why kinetic strength is not as relevant to destroying the opponent as elastic energy and explosive speed as the primary catalyst for devastating strikes, defense, and throws.
  • DSD Emotional Content- Why the dark side of emotion is critical to recognizing as a key weapon for wiping out the opposition
  • DSD Speed Principles-reaction, motion, intuitive
  • Martial Arts vs. Self-defense- Understanding the differences between a sudden attack and a cage fight and why two seconds are such an important number to understand.

DSD Sparring Methods- Learn how to teach controlled striking and progressive intensity for optimal retention and ongoing development.

This list represents the instructional and learning features of Level One DSS. It provides the practitioner with a relevant set of skills and training methods for today’s self-defense scenarios while creating the pathway to Level Two which extends into more advanced striking, grappling, trapping , sparring  weapons defense, and strategic fitness development. To develop a combative skill set one has to put in the time, thought, and energy to develop a spontaneous ability to generate explosive power with relevant techniques that can adapt to combative actions of one’s opponent or environment. With completion of Level One an instructor will have the capacity to teach and demonstrate these principles.
